Brief History of The Hilltop Property

Construction of the Stone Library and the other buildings was begun in 1930 on "The Hilltop", summer season residence of Professor Harold Archer Van Dorn and his wife, Viretta Calhoun Van Dorn. Each summer their visitors (friends near and far; academic colleagues; sometimes graduate students whose mentor was Professor Van Dorn) were provided lodging in one of the buildings. Dining was on the Terrace, or around the campfire. In the 1950s, the buildings were expanded and winterized. In 1988, year-round resident-owner Everett Archer Van Dorn, son of Harold and Viretta Van Dorn, re-arranged and enlarged the guest accommodations, furnishings, and amenities, establishing Hilltop Haven Bed and Breakfast.
